Eating Materialism

May 22, 2013 in Simple Eating Blog

A few months ago while reading the book 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess I was hit with another area where we (as a society) are far from simple.

Not only are we hoarders… often letting things sit in packed cupboards or shelves for months/years, but we are also materialistic.

We are always running for the new, shiny, more expensive, bigger and better options.

Sure, we can talk about full clothes closets that take our time and money, but it is possible that our kitchens and the way we eat has become just as cluttered…

…or even more cluttered.

  • Do we need minimalism in our eating?
  • What should minimalist eating look like?

Is this going too far, or is it one of the most important areas of our life? Read the rest of this entry →

Simple Stories – Carmella

May 17, 2013 in Simple Stories

Simple Living - Carmella Excited to share this guest post from Carmella.  I have ‘house envy’ of her cute little place.

Our Simple Little House

The light can’t help but fill the room. Everywhere you look, there’s a window welcoming its arrival. Even if you look up, there’s a window there at the ceiling, in that high dormer, not to mention the one in the gable end that breaks open a view of treetops and sky.

The white plank walls and ceiling seem to expand in all that light, making one believe there’s more space than there actually is. And all this light and all this white is anchored steady by the color of wood underfoot. Simple Living Stories

Stretching across the far end of the room is the simple kitchen with its painted cabinets and open barn wood shelves. Opposite this, floor to ceiling bookshelves line the wall near the slip covered sofa and vintage easy chair.

An antique pendant light hangs above the dining table that’s pulled up to a banquette tucked beneath a window on the adjacent wall. The ship’s ladder stairway leads to the loft where three boys bunk; the hall leads to the bath, the master bedroom, and writing nook.

This is our house. It’s just 665 square feet.

Simple Living StoriesNot so long ago, there was more. More house, more stuff, more debt; more to care for, more to clean, more to store. Like most people, we’d taken the traditional path toward the American Dream; the path that lead toward the well-paying job, the good-size house (and its 30-year note), and the lifestyle that seemed to always have us ready to spend.

Then, unexpected job losses and the real estate crash of 2008-2009 detonated an explosion of the perfect financial storm. In the tumult, we lost nearly everything.

And there we were, dumb-struck, black-eyed, and sweat-stained, standing at ‘Square One’. Read the rest of this entry →

Minimalist Living – A Few Of My Favorite Things

May 15, 2013 in Creating Simple Living

Image: stay2gether FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Minimalist living and simple living are usually talking about things we don’t need.

… but we still need things.

In fact, some really awesome things make it possible to have less things.

Some things really make life better.  Their value far outweighs their need to be taken care of and picked up.

Since cutting our belongings down to what would fit in 4 carry-ons, 2 suitcases, and a few backpacks we have really narrowed down on what our most important things are.

… so these are a few of my favorite things.  (raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens... I love kittens)

If I was stranded on a deserted island, these are the 10 things I would want with me … you get the idea…

Top 10 possessions I love!

Dumplings… and our China life

May 10, 2013 in Simple Living Travel

Dumplings - Simple Living ChinaI have to say that I came to China expecting rice to be a main part of the diet.  I was excited about it because I like rice, my kids eat rice, and I can cook rice.

However, when we got here, we realized that rice is more of a south China food.  Sure, there is rice here in the north, and we still eat it, but it is not the foundation of every meal like I had thought before.

What is big here is dumplings

It isn’t the foundation of every meal, but it is the specialty here.  When people have guests, or on special days, they make dumplings.  There are lots of little shops selling dumplings along the road.

And they are really good! Read the rest of this entry →

It Isn’t Content You’re Missing

May 8, 2013 in Creating Simple Living

What are you good at?  What did you love in school?  What have you always wanted to do? Are you doing it now?

Maybe it isn’t content you are missing

Have you had a nagging though in your head? Something you have wanted to try? Maybe something you are trying to get started now? What is keeping you from doing it?

Maybe it isn’t quality you are missing

What do you want to try that is yours?  Is there a part of you that you want to share with others?

Maybe you are living the way you want to live, but maybe not.  Maybe there is something that has been bugging you, something you have wanted to start, or something you are wanting to put more time into.  … but you are not sure if the content or quality is good enough.

It isn’t content or quality you are missing. Read the rest of this entry →
