June 19, 2012 in My Simple Living
I know most of you coming to this site are not into photography… and that photography doesn’t have much to do with intentional living or minimalism, but I wanted to share with you an update of what we are doing.
Part of our minimalist transition last spring was to find more time to pursue our hobbies. We have been self-employed for about 5 years now but our goal is to find more ways to have less location based income. Starting this website and writing books is one way I am working toward this. It is lots of work, but it is fun and I can do it from anywhere. (like right now I am typing in a parked car… but that is another story).
My husband has been doing amazing things with photography. Really I think he is just amazing so the photography thing is just extra One area he has been working with a lot is texturing pictures. Like the picture at the top and this picture texture gives a painted look as well as lots more depth and interest. To do it you merge your main picture to a texture picture which is usually a close up of something… with a lot of texture. It can be cloth, wood, metal, stones or anything else that has a cool texture. He kinda went nerd in this area and created a HUGE texture library.
Because textures also have color the color in the texture affects the image. Because of that he went on to make whole collections in different color pallets so if you want to add a bark texture to a photo but you want to add a blue hue he has the texture for that. He went beyond this and also created transparent textures that would just add texture and not color.
When he went looking around at what other people were offering he realized:
- he had way more texture files than most people were selling
- very few people had his color tinted texture idea
- no one had the transparent texture
- lots of texture photos for sale were smaller files and wouldn’t be able to blow up into photo art for the wall without the texture going fuzzy and grainy
- this was a growing area
Taking all that together he has packaged up his textures for sale. Not only is he selling all his textures, he has also put together a whole bunch of training. He wanted this package of textures to be available and useful for anyone if they were a professional photographer or if they just picked up a camera and wanted to learn. He has written and video (long videos – full classes) training for the new Adobe Photoshop CS6 which is the main photo editing software for the professionals. Then he did training for Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 which is the home (much cheaper) version of the Photoshop program. Then he went and found a free editing software called Perfect Layers 2 and created training for using his textures on that as well. So, if you have pictures and want to add textures this package is for you
It is being released today! Check it out at textureaphoto.com.
It is super scary to release any kind of product. Creative products are like a piece of your soul and your reputation is tied up in to them. It is way to easy to sit on them and dream about them but never actually release them. All of the process has been brand new to us. We knew nothing about web design, photography, blogging, book writing, selling before we dove into these projects and it has been challenging and sometimes a slow process learning it all. We still have tons of learning to do, but it has been rewarding.
So moral of the story, work on your passions and work on your goals and try to find ways for them to help each other. The worst thing that could happen is it doesn’t work and you learn and move on. We have failed at a bunch of ideas through the years but each time we are learning something new.
Second point. Is this something that would be interesting to you? Because I think you are fabulous and I am married to the man I can get you a %15 off if you use the code LSL15
Do you know others who might be interested? Feel free to pass on the discount code when you tell them. We need all the help we can get to spread the word. Because of the way social networks put up stuff and organize stuff instead of just liking (which you can totally do too) this article, paste the website http://textureaphoto.com into your social network Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Twitter or other.
If you want to try it but think it is too complicated it is totally not. If you have any questions (I went through the training and made sure it was clear and I was able to do it, and I know nothing about this stuff either) you can ask me. If it somehow (it won’t ) is way to hard to understand there is a 100% money back – just send us an e-mail and say you don’t want it – guarantee for 60 days.
The other crazy thing about releasing products is that you can do your best and then you still don’t know how it is going to go. Talk about nerves. Hopefully people will care, hopefully people will think it is worth buying, hopefully the price is set right… not too low or too high, hopefully the website or checkout or download doesn’t glitch, …hopefully not too many people hit the website at once and crash it (okay, that might be a dream), hopefully people like it.
Anyway around it, if people buy stuff or not it is super awesome to have a product out for sale. We will go celebrate tonight
Also, if you are wanting to work on a book, blog, or other creative project and there is anything I can help with or answer for you feel free to contact me. I would love to share whatever I have figured out and help in anyway I can. It is either a dream or a product. A book in your head is worth nothing until it is released to the world. Dream, action, product, celebrate – work through the whole process. Don’t stop
