Not sure how long this post will end up, but a lot has been going on in the last few months and it all seems to interconnect.  I feel like I need to tell you it all together.

So grab a copy of tea and a comfy seat.

You may like this post if you like simple living, travel, adventure, personal growth, social enterprise, entrepreneurship, photography, or just a long rambling sorry :)

Here it goes:

So, years ago, when I started this blog and we started making changes to our life, we were trying to move toward more intentional living.  We have never wanted less life – we have wanted more room in life for the things worth living.

This week we are doing 5 days of the most popular posts on LSL during 2013.  To go along with the restart you can grab a FREE copy of Simple Living: 30 days to less stuff and more life.

I wish you a wonderful and simple 2014!

From March 13, 2013 (just as we started traveling)

Just over a month ago I posted about what we owned as a minimalist (or simple living) family.

But a lot has changed in the last month.

Ever since we first started simplifying we dreamed of being able to live out of a backpack and travel…

…and just over 2 years since we started de-cluttering and making intentional changes it is now a reality!  We are in China and this post is about what we brought with us.

… we aren’t technically living out of backpacks… suitcases, but the idea is the same.

Here is what we brought with us and what we are storing…

Simple Living - Carmella

This week we are doing 5 days of the most popular posts on LSL during 2013.  To go along with the restart you can grab a FREE copy of Simple Living: 30 days to less stuff and more life.

I wish you a wonderful and simple 2014!

From May 17, 2013

Excited to share this guest post from Carmella.  I have ‘house envy’ of her cute little place.

Our Simple Little House

The light can’t help but fill the room. Everywhere you look, there’s a window welcoming its arrival. Even if you look up, there’s a window there at the ceiling, in that high dormer, not to mention the one in the gable end that breaks open a view of treetops and sky.

The white plank walls and ceiling seem to expand in all that light, making one believe there’s more space than there actually is. And all this light and all this white is anchored steady by the color of wood underfoot. Simple Living Stories

Stretching across the far end of the room is the simple kitchen with its painted cabinets and open barn wood shelves. Opposite this, floor to ceiling bookshelves line the wall near the slip covered sofa and vintage easy chair.

An antique pendant light hangs above the dining table that’s pulled up to a banquette tucked beneath a window on the adjacent wall. The ship’s ladder stairway leads to the loft where three boys bunk; the hall leads to the bath, the master bedroom, and writing nook.

This is our house. It’s just 665 square feet.

Simple Living StoriesNot so long ago, there was more. More house, more stuff, more debt; more to care for, more to clean, more to store. Like most people, we’d taken the traditional path toward the American Dream; the path that lead toward the well-paying job, the good-size house (and its 30-year note), and the lifestyle that seemed to always have us ready to spend.

Then, unexpected job losses and the real estate crash of 2008-2009 detonated an explosion of the perfect financial storm. In the tumult, we lost nearly everything.

And there we were, dumb-struck, black-eyed, and sweat-stained, standing at ‘Square One’. Read the rest of this entry →

I wish you a wonderful and simple 2014!

From July 3, 2013

I got an e-mail from a reader a few weeks ago about minimalist living.   I replied to her and we chatted a bit, but I wanted to share it with the rest of you in case other people have a similar question.

I think it represents frustration many people feel.  So with her permission I am going to share with you the e-mail and respond.

Here is the e-mail:

I have been doing a lot of reading about minimalism lately, and I absolutely LOVE the sounds of it, and the benefits experienced. The 2 main things that I love about what people who are living minimalist lives talk about are (1) the money you can save and (2) the personal growth and new appreciation for the things that really matter (ex. finding a career that really suits you and fulfills you).

There is one BIG question that keeps coming up for me though… Read the rest of this entry →

our dinning room - minimalist home, simple living, organizationThis week we are doing 5 days of the most popular posts on LSL during 2013.  To go along with the restart you can grab a FREE copy of Simple Living: 30 days to less stuff and more life.

I wish you a wonderful and simple 2014!

From January 30, 2013 (before we started traveling)

My previous post about ‘exactly’ what we own has (by far) been the most popular post on this blog.

I figured I would post an update because we have gotten settled and cleared out more. We love our little apartment!

If your new to the blog (welcome!), we are a family of 4 (kids are 9 and 5) who have downsized from 2000 square feet to a small 1 bedroom apartment.

Come on in!  Have a cup of tea and a cookie and let me show you around.  This is what we own:
