Not For Sale – Simple Compassion

One cause that really gets me upset… and is easy to push out of my head because I can’t handle the thought, is slavery.  It blows my mind that there are more slaves now than at any other time in history.  Really?  I know the world isn’t perfect, but it seems like we would learn and not make more and more of the same mistakes.  No one, of any age, from any country, of any gender, or any other difference, should ever be for sale!

Why does our society creates such demand?  It is easy to point the blame at people who are exploiting others, but they are still a small part of the total problem.

Here is a video.  This one is about 2 years old and unfortunately the numbers have been going up.

It is a global problem and it is sick.  The child sex trade has got to be the worst.

I am reading a book called ‘Somebody’s Daughter: The Hidden Story of America’s Prostituted Children and the Battle to Save Them‘ by Julian Sher and it talks about child prostitutes in the US.  It talks about the problem and what is being done about it.  We hear about foreigners being brought into the country to work in the sex trade (which is totally wrong) but this book pointed out that, especially with kids, the numbers are made up of Americans.  And about the numbers?  Nobody knows how many kids are trapped in the sex trade… no one has bothered to count this in our country.

If a 17 year old girl sleeps with her 18 year old boyfriend she is not old enough to give consent and it is considered rape.  Serious stuff and jail time.  If a 14 year old kid gets trapped in prostitution and gets caught, she is in trouble but nothing happens to her ‘clients’.  How wrong is that?  And society in general sees the kid as a criminal and a trouble maker.

Not For Sale

Not for Sale is an organization that is fighting slavery of all kinds everywhere.  They have great stuff on their website that talks about what slavery can look like.  We can often have the picture in our minds of people physically locked up but often it is through threats and manipulation.  People can be controlled with all kinds of different methods and the result is the same.

I wanted to feature this organization because they have an awesome looking event coming up (that I would totally love to go to if I wasn’t on the other side of the country).

The 2012 Not For Sale Global Forum

Pulled from their site:

Imagine intimate, face-to-face sessions between fellow abolitionists and some of the top anti-human trafficking leaders in our world. Global Forum is more than a conference. It is an interactive, up-close training session preparing and inspiring you to fight human trafficking in your local community and around the world.

The business of human trafficking is smart and always changing. To combat it, we need an even smarter movement of abolitionists. (source)

If you are anywhere near Silicon Valley CA on November 1 & 2 (or could be) take a look and see if you can check it out.  There are student discounts and group discounts.

This organization realizes the problem is complicated and is working to train people all over the world to help fight.  The fact that the problem in our country is so complicated is brought out by ‘Somebody’s Daughter‘.   It is a huge money business and run by (unfortunately) very smart people.

No matter how complicated or how hard, we can’t sit still and not do something.

Thanks for reading!  Do you have a favorite organization or charity that fights slavery that you would like to share?  I wrote about IJM and I know that there are several others.

  1. You’re not alone in detesting slavery of any kind,my friend,I shudder to think what this world is coming to (though having read Revelation many times,I’m not surprised…just hating the waiting) 🙁

    • yeah 🙁

  2. It is barbaric that underage prostitutes are jailed while their customers go free. I’ve heard of a few places were the laws are changing and these kids are getting treatment for sexual abuse instead of jail time, but until the clients do time the trafficking won’t end.

    • barbaric is a good word… though it still seems too good

  3. Shelly Shelly

That’s so strange. If someone paid someone to kill or steal or commit another crime, they’d be considered quite involved in the crime. Right? Why not sex? There must be something in it for them (the judges and law makers) or they wouldn’t be so protective of the real criminals (those intimidating and brainwashing the children). Sin is sick. As a child, I read a lot of poetry. One poem said something to the effect of: “I’m not used to this old world, and if all goes well… I never will be.” I can relate to that. This should never be acceptable or ignored. Too many people push the thought away because it’s uncomfortable. Thank you Lorilee for putting it in the forefront of our minds again! We all must keep discussing these issues and be proactive to the extent we are able. Even voicing our moral stance can move mountains. I don’t think you have to get political (though working to change laws and require enforcement of the punishments would be fantastic).

    • yes, I don’t want to be caught quietly approving of it going on because I am not doing or saying anything… though I know I need to do more. You are right about the other crimes…. it just doesn’t make any sense. It just upsets me that there is such a demand. Demand drives the market… saving girls when there is so much demand and profit available doesn’t do much for the whole problem. I don’t know what can be done, but I love the organizations like this one that work to stop girls from getting pulled into the mess in the first place.
