Simple Challenge – Week 2

Welcome to Growth Week in the Simple Living Challenges!

Every Monday we do different challenges toward simple living.  They include cleaning, organizing, moving things out of house and more.

This week is about focusing on adding more of what you want into your life. When you add what you love into your life, it makes it easier to part with the things that are less important.

One of my favorite sources of growth in the last few years have been books.  Books have a way of stretching my thinking and helping me focus.

I wanted to share with you today my top 5 favorite growth books from the last few years. Your assignment this week is growth, if you are looking for a new book to reach check these ones out 🙂

Top 5 Books on Simple Living and Growth

1. 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

I had to have this book recommended to me a few times before I actually purchased it and read it.  To be honest, the idea sounded kinda dumb to me.  But it pulled me in and I loved it.

In the book the author cuts down to only 7 things for one month at a time in different areas of her life.  … I will admit the idea is still a little strange.  She is not a minimalist, and the changes were only temporary.  However, the book is very well written and the ideas shared were very thought provoking. I love how this book deals with excess in so many different areas, instead of just stuff.   We are a society of excess in everything.  Great read.  You can grab it here on Amazon.

2. The Art of Non-Conformity: Set Your Own Rules, Live the Life You Want, and Change the World

I read this book about a year and a half ago and just loved Chris Guillebeau perspective.  I love the way he things, and the way he lives.   I think it is possible to make life changes and have it be from a selfish perspective, but that isn’t the goal.  The goal is to live your life, not someone else’s, and make the difference you were made to make.  On a personal coolness note he just finished visiting every country in the world.  You can grab it here on Amazon.

3. The Joy of Less

The best book I have read about simplifying your home.  It covers many areas in very good detail.  This is the practical guide to making your home simple.  You can grab it here on Amazon.

4.  Changing Gears

What could be cooler than a family with twin boys cycling from Alaska to Argentina… um, not much.  This is a story book so not specifically a book on growth.  However, through the pages are huge lessons in parenting, creating your own life, facing fears, and throwing yourself into something you want to do.  Personally I have never enjoyed riding a bike, but I loved this book.   The story is told so well, and so many of the same challenges face anyone deciding to make changes in their life.  You can grab it here on Amazon.

5.  In Defense of Food

Of all the health books I have read (because I love reading about health) this is probably one of the best.  Instead of being written by a doctor or researcher stuck on an idea or super-food or specific diet, it is written by a reporter who researched all of it.   It provides a balanced (and simple) look at what we should eat, factoring in so much other knowledge.  You can grab it here on Amazon.

    We all want more happiness, right? I recommend “Choosing happiness” by Stephenie Dowrick. It explains how our thoughts influence our happiness, and how we can work with that to be happier, whatever our circumstances.

    I agree with you on the Joy of Less, I loved that one.

  3. This week I’m rereading Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology, by Eric Brende, who spent a year and a half living among an unidentified group similar to the Amish or Mennonites. While I don’t intend to “unplug” to that extent, I love the descriptions of how relationships improve with less technology. After I read the book the first time, my husband and I started a habit of sitting on our porch swing every night to talk (just on the sofa inside when the weather is too bad).
